Children of the Light (CotL) is a registered Charitable Organisation in Ghana, Reg. No. DSW/3233, and in New Zealand, Reg. No. CC44538. The organisation has been in operation in Ghana, West Africa since 2005. CotL runs year-round educational programs for children aged 5 to 16 years in one-to-one and small group learning settings. Since 2005, we have had over 2,500 children participate in our various programs.
Its educational program is unique in that it nurtures children in all areas of learning; Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Environmental issues, Visual and Performing Arts. CotL meets with the children after-school, Saturdays and during the school holidays. A hot meal is served during the Saturday classes. The children enjoy a lively educational experience which is conducted in a safe and non-threatening environment.Through donations, CotL has built a Learning Centre in Ghana’s Eastern Region which was officially opened in August 2019. Although the centre is not fully complete, we have come a long way since construction started in 2009. A large playing field has been created and a variety of trees have been planted on the property. The construction of the front wall is also complete.
Work has begun to create a branch of the program in a remote village in the Northern Region of Ghana.
Many of our past students have ventured onto higher education and careers and our current students continue to benefit with the program, acquiring a vast amount of skills.
The CotL programs are designed around a yearly calendar which include international topics such as ‘Black History Month’, ‘World Water Day’, ‘Earth Day’, and ‘World Clean-up Day’. These exciting programs help to broaden the children’s scope of the world.
Alongside this, we annually organise a Reading Month Competition, Mathematics Competition, Spelling Bee, Vocabulary Test, Recycling Competition, and Drama and Sport Events. Children that attend our classes also partake in ongoing literacy and numeracy classes. In addition to academics, the children are assisted in their emotional, social and physical growth. A bi-annual event is the preparation of colourful hygiene parcels that are sent out to various sources such as children with disabilities, children in hospital, street children and the elderly to name a few.
CotL also works with the Accra street children twice a month. These visits involve serving the children a healthy meal, story time, crafts, literacy and numeracy lessons. The children have a chance to draw, write and create during these lessons. We at CotL seek to make education an enjoyable and life changing experience for the many children we work with, as we believe strongly that education is a vital component in enabling children to reach their full potential.
Children of the Light soon to open first branch in Ghana's North East Region 26 October 2021
The 1st branch of Children of the Light will open this Saturday, 30th October 2021, in a remote village in Ghana’s North East Region. The room is small, but for now this is where all library books and resources are kept. We actually started the Saturday class back in July, we have one person, Belinda Anukaru, leading this and currently training a second. Each Saturday the long benches, tables and mats (as we purchased) have been taken out from the little room (as it was being restored) and placed under the trees for classes. The children are loving it.
Our senior teacher, Patience Akunduo, will soon leave our HQ in the Eastern Region for the opening, she has a 15hour journey ahead. Thanks to the many donations, the luggage to count is 9 large pieces. These boxes and bags are filled with books, toys, gently used clothing, school supplies, and solar lights. At the opening this Saturday, there will be dancing, singing, a recital, speeches and a refreshment enjoyed. This little library is actually the first for miles and miles.
With all of this, we still need help, any donation big or small will help us in so many ways. Thank you and God bless!
Together we are making a difference.
