There is no doubt that education is important, so important that the United Nations has declared it a basic human right. However, the reality is that only 3% of refugees make it to higher education. We believe education is pivotal to changing the future for refugees and without education an entire generation is at risk.

Empower provides a mentoring and support initiative to try to address the underrepresentation of refugees in higher education in New Zealand through education, leadership, and capacity-building. Empower focuses on assisting individuals within their early career stages and provides a youth-specific support network within the resettlement process.

Our aim is to overcome any access barriers that are preventing refugee youth from pursuing higher education, through our mentoring programme.

At Empower, our youth mentees will be paired with a mentor who is studying or working in an area of their interest to help give guidance and support in pursuing their respective career paths and goals.

We want to support refugee background youth in Aotearoa New Zealand to pursue higher education and all the amazing opportunities available here.
