Otago

The Globe Theatre, Dunedin, is a 20th century theatre attached to a 19th century house and has a Category 1 NZ Heritage classification. It is an amateur theatre that works as a company to stage 6-7 productions of modern and classic plays each year, providing opportunities for young people to work alongside experienced performers and audiences to see affordable and exciting works. It supports New Zealand playwrights by staging (often premiering) their work. The Friends of the Globe also work to preserve Dunedin’s heritage, ensuring that the Globe continues to function as efficiently as possible as a theatre and that what remains of the original house is conserved for the benefit of future generations.

We have staged hundreds of productions since we started in 1961, have encouraged many young performers into professional careers and playwrights achieve national recognition. We are now working hard to raise the funds needed to ensure the ongoing future of this iconic theatre.

More about us

The Globe Theatre was built in 1961 by Patric and Rosalie Carey, with the help of their many friends and supporters. The Careys’ enthusiasm, energy and ability to inspire others were instrumental in creating something very special not just in Dunedin but also in the cultural life of the rest of the country. The Friends of the Globe Theatre took over the management of the Globe when the Careys departed in the early 1970s and have continued to work with a similar degree of passion and determination as its founders. Each year the Friends of the Globe Theatre, which is now an incorporated society that is registered with the Charities Commission, elect an executive committee that works with its members to decide on its programme of productions for the year and also ensure that the theatre building is cared for and remains fit for purpose. All who work for the Globe do so without payment and thus all profits made from productions and other events are channelled back into the running of the theatre. The Globe’s mission statement is “The amateur theatre with the professional attitude” and the Friends work hard at all times to achieve this level of excellence.

Getting closer to target!  12 April 2015

Recent donations and pledges have brought us well over our initial goal of half a million dollars and very close to the $550,000 we still need to cover all consultancy/consents fees as well as actual building costs. This has been a huge effort, one made possible only by the support of lots of people. So thank YOU!
