Golden Bay Grand Stand

Golden Bay Grand Stand

Would you like to help? A donation will help fund the preservation of the 1899-built Golden Bay grandstand.

Nelson / Tasman

We are a group of Golden Bay Community members who have been fighting to save the 1899-built community grandstand at the Takaka Recreation Grounds.

Tasman District Council (TDC) had approved its demolition to make way for... car parks. This with no alternative grandstand seating proposed.

But after four years of effort on the part of a large number of dedicated Golden Bay community members, TDC has committed to the retention and restoration of the Grandstand.

The good news is that the new shared recreation building is fully open and the Grandstand is still standing.

We set up this page to fund raise for both the cost of the fight and also, should we be successful, to assist with the preservation and restoration of the grandstand. We still need money to pay off the cost of keeping the Grandstand standing.

Thank you for helping us. If you would like to know more about the fight, plus our other fundraising efforts, please have a look at our:

More about us

The Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust was formed to raise money for the preservation and restoration of the heritage grandstand at the Takaka Recreation Grounds.

We include preservation as well as restoration in our aims because we are having to fight the proposed demolition of the grandstand and the money raised here may need to be used to help with legal costs.

While we did everything in our power to negotiate a solution with the council we had to once again commenced legal proceedings. The council has since voted unanimously to rescind the decision to demolish, and the legal proceedings are adjourned until the future of the grandstand is secured. This is a very positive step and means that funds raised may actually be used on the Grandstand itself which was the hope from the start of this campaign.

Meanwhile the Grandstand still stands and the community intends to keep it that way.

TDC commits to the retention and restoration of the Grandstand  8 August 2020

It's been a while since an update but, in a nutshell, since 2016 many efforts were made to come to an agreement with TDC that would ensure the survival of the Grandstand, including Environment Court action, negotiations, community proposals. None were successful.

But in June 2018 the High Court of New Zealand made an interim order preventing Tasman District Council from demolishing the Grandstand while judicial review proceedings were underway.

These court proceedings continued until 28 May 2020 when they were withdrawn by the Trust and the Association as a condition of the 19 March 2020 TDC resolution which committed the council to the retention and restoration of the Grandstand as well as the recognition of many of the GB A&P Association's rights with regard to use of the land and buildings at the showgrounds.

We have spent a lot of money getting to this point and we are still fundraising to clear our debts so any donation is welcome.

It is a little soul-destroying to be fundraising still HOWEVER we remind ourselves frequently that if we hadn't spent what we did there would be no Grandstand, so cheerfully we continue and look forward to sitting in the Grandstand once more.
