Please support our Whalery project; it's an exciting natural history development. We preserve and interpret the history of Golden Bay/Mohua.

Nelson / Tasman

10 October -- Thanks to Pub Charity and TDC we've now covered the basic construction costs of our Whalery--Hooray!

We're still gently raising funds for the information displays and final costs leading towards our late December opening. So, if you'd like to help, we'd love to receive your donations!

Our 25th anniversary project to mark our way forward is "Let's Get the Whale into the Whalery".This project will benefit not only our local communnity (especially school students), but also the 10,000 visitors (New Zealand and international) who come to Golden Bay/Mohua each year.

There is a need for better awareness of our complex local marine ecosystem, particularly an understanding of conservation and sustainability issues around aquaculture, which is a major local industry, and the regular mass whale strandings on Farewell Spit.

The stories we share have links to the earliest knowledge of Aotearoa New Zealand. Maori settlements began around 1300, and in December 1642 the "first meeting"--with Abel Tasman's crew--took place here. European settlement began in the 1840s with mining, forestry, and then farming and tourism.

We collect material to document our history and create displays and provide research services. We appreciate our annual grant from Tasman District Council, and the accommodation which we occupy but we also rely on donations and grants to provide our service. Please support us if you can.

Closing In? Very exciting  10 October 2016

Kia ora koutou wonderful donors -- we have great news.

In the last week of September we learnt that Pub Charity had donated the cost of the special glass ($3241) and then our council covered the cost of replacement decking ($1760).

So ... with your help we've actually raised enough funds to cover the construction costs, which is a HUGE relief. We're still gently fundraising to cover the costs of display panels and a booklet to mark the opening ... late December is Alan's best guess for the whale skeleton to arrive -- you'll definitely hear about it!

This week the gib board is being installed--so it's not long to go before the Whalery is handed over, after 2+ years of fundraising. It's a good feeling to bring a really "bright idea" to fruition, thanks to help from many people.

Thank you again for your generous support -- with grateful thanks from the Board and staff..
