Grey District Waitangi Day Community Picnic Celebrations

Annual Community Picnic held in Greymouth's Dixon Park - entirely volunteer and grant reliant

West Coast

For seventeen years now on Waitangi Day (6 February) our volunteer committee has organized and provided for over 2000 people in our community to a fun, cultural and entertaining day. The committee relies totally on grants and donations and we would appreciate any donation you would be prepared to make.

The Waitangi Day Community Picnic is held in a local park (Dixon Park) and music is played by live bands and continues throughout the day. There are activities for young children and a barbecue lunch provided along with a traditional hangi for a cold coin donation, hot and cold drinks and sweet buns are also provided free of charge.

the BBQ and hangi is available at lunch time with around 1500 people being catered for.

This event promotes a sense of community togetherness and wellbeing and is a great way to acknowledge the significance and spirit of Waitangi Day.

A large number of volunteers help make the day the success it is and the Maori information stands, cultural events and hangi are a very popular part of this day.

There are also other organisations starting to become part of the day. The barbecue and hangi are in Dixon Park which is the main venue, we invite local stall holders to set up a market at the entrance to the park also.

We now call on the people of the community and wider to donate towards the picnic big or small to ensure it can continue running every year.

If you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact Sarah Conroy on Phone 769 8623 during business hours.
