Animal Shelter Charitable Trust

We cater for the more mature animals who have been abandoned, ill-treated or no longer wanted by their owners.

Northland

We care for older animals with love and dignity. We work in conjunction with Vets, Women's Refuge, Hospice, SPCA and those who work with mature citizens. We provide warmth, cuddles, vet care, good food and all animals are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

We take in animals where the owner has died or had to move into a rest home. We re-home those that are eligible to elderly people who just want a companion. It is amazing how these animals and people can give so much to each other and live really happy lives together. We always give a two week trial period to see if the cat or dog is the right one for the person. If the animal is not right, then we take the animal back in and love them till the end of their lives where they go to rainbow bridge to chase butterflies/ We have a no kill policy, but if an animal is suffering, we will not see them suffer and only then will we euthanase. Otherwise they are part of the shelter family and live truly happily at the shelter. We currently have two 19 year old Chihuahuas who have been together from birth, they came to the shelter when they were 15 years old as their owner had died. Storm and Bailey , as they are known are still very happy, they eat well and love their cuddles. (you will see a picture of them on this page). We also have a cat who is 26 Years old, (Pebbles) and she still thinks she is queen of the establishment. We take the more mature animals because most would euthanase them as it is hard sometimes to re-home them if the family circumstances Change. We take them in and love them whole heartedly.

We also have a sponsorship system if you would like to sponsor a cat or dog to assist with Vet care, food etc.

You are also very welcome to come and visit the shelter, just give us a call on 09 431 8300 to let us know of your arrival.
