The only breeding facility nationwide dedicated to protect the further decline of the tallest kiwi - the Great Spotted Kiwi. Eggs are received from the wild and incubated. Hatched chicks are cared for a period of 2 - 6 months prior to their release into predator-free creche sites. This programme is the most succesful method of increasing kiwi populations.

Between 2005 -2010 the Trust doubled the two most endangered kiwi species, the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. Since the start of the Great Spotted Kiwi programme 91 eggs have been managed at the facility.

The presentations at the kiwi breeding centre gives visitors and students an insight into the work being done to protect our endangered kiwi species.
