Help us to train refugee background individuals for meaningful employment and lift families out of poverty through economic independence!
Auckland
Former refugees are one of the most economically marginalised groups in New Zealand.
We need to get hold of some capital to kick-start our social enterprise...will you help?
CREATE is a project of Refuge at work Trust in partnership with the Auckland Refugee Community Coalition (ARCC). It is a non-for-profit social enterprise aimed at equipping refugees with basic ready-for trade skills and a level of confidence necessary for attaining employment in the trades sector.
We will provide free, 8 week courses, taught by a qualified carpenter(s), who train refugees in carpentry theory and practice. The curriculum (currently under development) will include modules on work-place safety, reading plans, tools and equipment use and practical construction.
Throughout the course, students will build a large one bedroom sleep-out. These sleep-outs will be sold to generate income, helping to sustain on-going operational costs of the programme.
The Trust will partner with Trade companies to guarantee apprenticeships for graduating students of the course. Each course will be 8 weeks in length and in the first year will have 6 refugee students per course (up to 36 graduating refugees in the first year). All participants will be provided with a start-up tool kit inclusive of basic gear required for the apprenticeship. The Trust will provide ongoing advocacy and mentoring for the apprentices, particularly in their first year of employment.
CREATE Outcomes:
1. Former refugees are equipped with theory and practical carpentry/trade skills for gaining apprenticeships and employment in trades
2. Unemployed or economically marginalised refugees are empowered to find jobs.
3. Reduced number of former refugees and their families dependent unemployment benefit.
4. An established network between private sector and refugee service providers to increase empowering employment opportunities for refugees.
5. Better development outcomes for refugee families, and in particular children.
Refuge at Work is a Charitable Trust that empowers Auckland refugee communities through intentional mentoring, up-skilling and training to equip them for meaningful employment.
With support from the Ministry of Social Development, we will be running pre-trade courses to equip former refugees to find meaningful employment in this sector. We will be connecting them with NZ employers who can employ and train them as they work towards qualifications.
Employment is crucial for successful re-settlement, belonging, and development. Please help us give these inspiring people a better life in Aotearoa!
