Sinclair Wetlands

Sinclair Wetlands

Please help protect and enhance the largest privately owned wetland in New Zealand! Wetlands host more wildlife than any other habitat type!

Otago

Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau is named for the site of Tukiauau, an early Ngati Mamoe chief. Today the wetlands are managed by Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau/ Sinclair Wetlands Trust.

Our restoration aims include maintaining and enhancing wetland habitats, control of weeds and pests, and the re-vegetation, back to native forest, of the islands within the wetlands. Volunteers are an integral part of this process. We aim to enhance appreciation of and opportunity for Mahinga Kai (sustainable food gathering) and to increase cultural awareness, and reconnect people back to the land, via education and hands-on experience.

More about us

Sinclair Wetlands Trust is a non-profit charitable organisation responsible for managing and enhancing Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau / Sinclair Wetlands.

Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau Sinclair Wetlands is regarded as the largest privately owned wetland in New Zealand. This 315ha wetland lies between lakes Waihola and Waipori on the Taieri Plains, 50km South of Dunedin city.

Wetlands have long been undervalued in New Zealand with over 90% of wetlands being filled/drained. Wetlands are important natural water filters, carbon sinks and they help prevent erosion and flooding, and provide important habitat for 30% of NZ freshwater fish, a quarter of our native birds and over 450 native plants!

Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau Sinclair Wetlands relies on the support of the community and volunteers to assist with habitat restoration, plant and pest control, restoration plantings, track building and maintenance.

A very beautiful and special place. Thanks to the Mãori Office at Otago for taking us there and very much appreciated listening to Tumai's stories. Wonderful team. I will never forget. Tēnā Koe / Nakummek.

Thank you for keeping this beautiful tract of land open for public enjoyment! Have you considered selling tee-shirts to raise funds? Or perhaps even providing the opportunity for individuals to purchase traps (maybe even with a little dedication placard) to help in your pest control efforts? I would certainly purchase a trap!
