The NZ Cat Foundation

At The NZ Cat Foundation we have under our care many hundreds of cats either in our indoor/outdoor enclosed 8000 square foot santuary, with fosters, or being cared for in managed colonies around Auckland.

Our aim is to encourage the kind and humane treatment of cats and to prevent and discourage cruelty to and harsh and thoughtless treatment of cats so as to enhance the general health of the community.

Sadly, thanks to the lack of responsibility of some humans there are many cats in our community who through no fault of their own have become stray.

Importantly we practise T-TNR in areas where are stray cats . This involves many nights of trapping by our volunteers, vet visits where they are health checked, de-sexed, vaccinated, treated if necessary and microchipped. Where ever possible these cats and all kittens are re-homed. However, for those who are too timid we return them from whence they came, as long as the property owner agrees, and we set up a feeding station with volunteers to feed them. If not, we take them into our beautiful purpose built sanctuary, affectionately known as "The Pussy Palace" This has predator proof fencing and is situated in a rural environment set in the midst of an olive grove where they can enjoy both indoor and outdoor living.

All of this costs around $15000 a month, which although The NZCF is a registered charity , has been mainly funded by its founder . Clearly, we need financial help from the community to continue the work we do.

Funding is required -to pay the enormous vet bills which are mounting daily

-to pay for daily food for around 350 cats daily

- maintenance on the shelter ( a new mesh roof is required as well as constant repairs and building of new huts)

-traps costing around $300 each

-Cages, bedding , cleaning products etc

-petrol costs for volunteers

We rely heavily on volunteers on a daily basis and desperately need more as well as financial help.

Volunteering or visting at the sanctuary also gives children , older people, people with anxiety issues, the opportunity to enjoy the company of our lovely cats and this is immensely rewarding.

What do we do? We Help the Helpless!

We receive many calls for help daily . Cats behind shops, factories, under an old villa. A vet phoning because the children want to put down a healthy cat when their mum goes into a retirement home! the police - a woman in women's refuge leaving mum cat with 4 kittens, a landlord threatening to bring in pest control because his tenants were feeding homeless cats. The list goes on and on.

And we always help. But we need help too!

Not only are we helping these poor defenceless cats, but we are doing a Community service which benefits everyone. Even for those who don't like cats, we are doing you a service as we are reducing the numbers of un-owned cats on our streets in a humane and caring way.
