SuperGrans Tairawhiti is a holistic wellbeing service that offers whānau a hand when they need it the most. We don’t judge the situation that people find themselves in, we help out with what whānau need and operate according to old-fashioned whanaungatanga. Our aim is to help in a way that supports people to help themselves and gain a greater level of control over their lives. At our Pitt street premises, we have a registered foodbank and a purpose-built commercial kitchen.
Through our kitchen we take food donations, as well as unsaleable and excess food from the Tairāwhiti community, food that cannot be sold but is good enough to eat; we then repurpose items for our kai parcels or turn the ingredients into nutritious meals. Our meals are handcrafted with love by our Chef and superstar volunteers then distributed to our whānau who need them the most.
We also offer practical workshops, budgeting advice, life skills and cooking classes, assisting our clients to develop practical skills so they can flourish. Generous donations from our community go into our Koha shed which provides bedding, clothing and useful household items to those in need.
We combine these services to carry out our vision; to support Tairāwhiti people living in hardship to learn to live well and flourish. SuperGrans Tairawhiti - helping people to help themselves.
With our vision as our guide our team of social workers and volunteers start by providing basic necessities like clothing, food and bedding with the aim of them then attending cooking workshops.
This is when individuals join us in our kitchen and learn how to make tasty, low-cost, hearty meals for themselves and their whanau using produce and ingredients cheaply available in our region.
For those without reliable transport, we deliver. For those interested in growing their own food, we show them how.
Through working with families, we have learned that people enjoy being in a space where they feel welcome, relaxed and where practical transferable skills can be gained. We also learned that in a safe environment people with worries are more likely to initiate healing conversations over a batch of scones or a pot of vege soup.
We also saw that there are multiple problems to be solved in order to support families doing it tough in our region.
By working within our community, we have learned that our region produces a surplus of food that can be targeted to support those who need it the most. We are proud to have built great connections in our district that deliver benefits to those who need it the most.
