Update for 10/02/201410 February 2014
On the 28th of September the annual Taupo Police organised SAREX (Search & Rescue Excercise) was held on Lake Taupo. Vessels and crews from Coastguards Lake Taupo, Turangi & Rotorua Lakes, plus Harbourmaster Crew aboard ""Blue Mist"", were rotated through various situations designed to reflect actual emergency scenarios. This year radio volunteers were also included in four different sites with IM (Incident Management) teams to direct the rescue vessels and crews as would happen in real time. Lake conditions were very choppy but all involved managed this learning exercise very well. The day finished up with a welcome meal and debrief at the Coastguard Lake Taupo Maritime Centre. Everyone was pleased to welcome the newly launched Coastguard Turangi vessel, ""Mauri Ora"", to its' first SAREX. The greater Lakes Districts including and around Rotorua and Taupo are now extremely well served by this fleet of three Coastguard IRBs measuring from 8 to 9.5 metres. Thank you to Taupo Police, the Taupo Harbourmaster and staff and all the volunteers on and off the water for giving their time so willingly to this important service.
