UN Women National Committee Aotearoa New Zealand is committed to raising funds to reduce violence against women in the Solomon Islands.

Wellington

This International Women’s Day, UN Women National Committee Aotearoa New Zealand is committed to raising funds for Journey to Justice, a UN Women project that empowers women in the Solomon Islands by reducing the violence they experience.

Why are we so passionate about supporting women in the Solomon Islands?

The answer is Jemimah, the young woman pictured above. Jemimah experienced harrowing physical and emotional abuse from her partner for years. Yet, there were no hotlines to call, no 24-hour police stations to visit, and no accessible safe houses for her and her three young children. So, she was forced to stay with her abusive partner.

Sadly, Jemimah’s experiences are not unusual. A recent study found that almost 2/3 of women in the Solomon Islands experience violence at the hands of their partners. Yet, there are very few support services or law enforcement options available to the women.

That’s why it’s so important for you to join the Journey to Justice!

Journey to Justice is a UN Women project that will train community leaders who will raise awareness about violence against women and support women through the court system. It will begin with two pilot programmes and will train approximately 15 community leaders during the first round. It will then expand to more areas with more community leaders.

We will be raising funds for this project over the next year because it is so important to us. We want to contribute $30,000 for Journey to Justice, but we need your financial support to ensure the journey's success!

Every dollar you give will help ensure the community leaders receive training and resources to support their efforts.

Every dollar you give will help support women who take their case before the courts, so they are never alone and always have access to the legal services they need.

In short, every dollar you give will help prevent other women from experiencing what Jemimah went through.

Please help support women in the Solomon Islands and secure your spot on the Journey to Justice by donating now.
