Wilderness Trail Trust

The West Coast Wilderness Trail needs your financial support to enable it to complete critical enhancement projects.

West Coast

The West Coast Wilderness Trail is beginning to breathe new life into the region with an influx of cyclists from all parts of NZ and the world coming to ride it. Now in its fourth season the Trails reputation as a ‘must do’ ride has started filtering out as riders return home after their West Coast experience and sing its praises.

Right at this moment however the Trail is facing one of its biggest challenges as it struggles with a significant financial deficit to complete a number of enhancement projects. These are required by the cycle trail network overseers in Wellington and the Great Ride status of the West Coast Wilderness Trail will be put at risk if we miss the August 2017 deadline set by them.

In an attempt to reduce the financial gap there has been a huge response from local community volunteer groups and organisations which has already seen hundreds of hours spent on the Trail. The contribution from these bodies has been significant and most importantly it has demonstrated the tremendous passion and pride local people are beginning to have for their Trail. Unfortunately, their efforts alone will not be enough to see the project through to its completion.

The recently formed Wilderness Trail Trust, a charitable body set up to market and promote the Trail, is not prepared to allow the efforts and aspirations of so many local people go unsupported. Financial assistance is absolutely necessary and the opportunity now exists for all of you who have ridden and had great enjoyment from this tremendous trail (and for those yet to come) to get in behind this initiative. Any donations we receive from you will be channelled directly through the Trust to those areas where the money is most urgently needed.

More about us

The Wilderness Trail Trust was established to actively promote, develop and manage the use of the Trail in such a way that it can fulfill its potential as a strong and sustainable contributor to the social, cultural, environmental and educational well being of the West Coast.

Use of funds

Donated funds will be used to finance structures (bridges) required for both the historic Kaniere Tramway and the Mahinapua Creek sections. Both new alignments will add significant improvements in rider safety and experience by routing the Trail away from busy highway sections and showcasing more of the beautiful landscapes that the West Coast is famous for.
