Youth Beyond Disasters

Youth Beyond Disasters

We're building capacity and developing young leaders to tackle disaster risk reduction. Official Youth Partners of UNISDR.

Canterbury

We are presently raising funds to support the Children and Youth Forum at the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. Please help us bring 500 young people together in Sendai in March to learn, develop realistic action plans and become leaders in disaster resilience!

Our Mission

To inspire and facilitate youth-led conversations on disasters, to mobilize children and youth to contribute to high level meetings, and to support them to create action plans that bring local and global change.

Our Vision

Children and young people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities become actively involved, meaningfully engaged and confident in leading disaster risk reduction.

What We Do

Working towards solidifying the growing community of young people committed to risk reduction and resilience, in partnership with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction, we seek to highlight the vital role that children and youth play in DRR and host workshops that produce realistic action plans, and grow leaders in disaster risk reduction.

History

In 2011, 100 young people from 19 countries in the Asia-Pacific region joined together to share their experiences of disaster, and develop realistic action plans at the first “Looking Beyond Disaster: UNESCO Youth Forum” in Christchurch, New Zealand. In 2014, Youth Beyond Disasters formed in partnership with the UNISDR, aiming to mobilize children and youth in the build up to the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

We are a small team, creating a wide network and doing our best at helping create the world we want to live in!

Why Youth Are Important

With 30 per cent of the world's population aged below 18, it is important that leaders engage with children and youth, ensuring they are called upon to respond to ever increasing risks.

As the decision-makers and leaders of tomorrow, children and youth need to acquire the appropriate knowledge, critical thinking and life-saving skills to prepare and respond to disasters. This will empower young people to make well-informed decisions and take action to protect themselves and their communities against future risk.
