Awatapu College Great Shave

  • Thank you!

      11 March 2022

A massive, massive thank you to everyone who donated to the Awatapu Great Shave. We ended up raising over $6000 which will accompany the money raised from our scaled down version of the Relay For Life with all funds going to the Manawatu Cancer Society. A video is being made of the event and we will share this through our facebook page.

Once again thank you to our hairdressers for donating their precious time; Amelia and Demi from Spectra and Jason from Chop Shop. Thanks to our students and staff for parting with their hair - we couldnt do it without you. Thank you Cindy for the logo, Jane for lighting, Michelle for sound, Tash and Elin for being on the door. Deborah for the beautiful flowers. Sam for filming. Keith for photos.

It truly does takes a village.

The reason I want to do the Great Shave is because my Grandad and Uncle both passed away from cancer. I am doing it in their memory.

I've been keen on doing the Great Shave for a couple months now after reading about the great shave in a booklet new students got at the interviews and it got me thinking on why I wanted to do it. The reason I wanted to do the great shave was because I've had a family member and other people I know affected by cancer and I want to support this cause even if it's just a little bit.

Why I want to partake: my Grandmother passed away from cancer. For her and the multitude of others affected by this.

I’m shaving this year to support our brave students. The Awatapu whanau has its many dealings with cancer and watching our students fight for this cause always inspires me.

I am shaving my head because I know people who have both suffered and died from cancer. My Grandpa passed away from cancer in 2020, I never got a chance to say goodbye and I miss him dearly. My aunt also passed away from cancer in Australia just after Christmas. COVID-19 affected mine and my family's ability to visit them during their last few days. I want to do this so that other people can get more research done about cancer and so that other people are less likely to lose someone close to them from cancer.  Cancer is just something no one should ever have to suffer from, that's why I'm doing this, so that people can have a higher survival rate of cancer, or not suffer from it at all.

I am shaving my head for two reasons. Firstly, to celebrate being 5 years Cancer free and secondly, for those who I know and love who don’t have the privilege of saying that.

Cancer affects so many people worldwide every year. It doesn’t just affect those who have it, but friends and whanau as well. I lost my mother to cancer and seeing so many young role models taking part in a great cause really warms the heart. So much so that I let my students rope me into participating myself.

I’ve been keen to shave my head for a while, and I think it would be a great opportunity to get a knew a look and raise money for a good cause. Last year I cut off 16 inches of hair and donated it to freedom wigs who makes wigs for those with conditions that make them lose their hair. I’ve had several family members and family friends get cancer and this would be a great way to support them.

You are a lucky person if you haven't been affected by cancer in some way. Unfortunately, I have family and friends that have been affected by cancer, and over the years I have had some close shaves with skin damage from the sun which could have become skin cancer. I am doing this to support anyone who has suffered through, or supported someone, with cancer.
