Lauren Holehouse: Malola Swim

I’m a 21 year old Fashion Graduate from North Auckland and I have just launched my label - Malola Swim. It has been really exciting over the last few months turning a dream of launching my own swimwear line into a reality.

I grew up by the coast and have always been a water baby, surfing and spending a lot of time at the beach, and the ocean has been a big part of my life. With my family having their own business in the rag trade for years, from a young age I was watching my Gran, Mum and Aunty make patterns as well as cutting and taking units to the manufacturing companies, and designing and sewing units themselves. Swimwear has always felt like the perfect combination of the two.

Malola Swim

I have always had trouble finding a bikini or swimsuit that fits well, is comfy and flattering, and also has its own unique flare. This is where I saw a gap in the market and decided to come up with my own line.

Malola Swim is a unique label that specialises in 100% reversible pieces, custom hand drawn and designed prints, and handmade sterling silver finishes and fastenings. The brand’s signature style experiments with the classic Brazilian Fit, bringing a bit of edge to the New Zealand market with smaller cuts.

With the launch of the first collection I am really excited to see what is in stall for the future of Malola Swim. As I have only just come out of University and am only working part time so I can develop and push my label, I am struggling with the funding for my second collection.

COST BREAKDOWN

The $8000 will cover all material costs including: fabric, elastic, strapping, as well as all fastenings and finishes. It will also cover the cost of getting the custom prints printed onto fabric and all of the manufacturing costs including sampling.

Any over-funding will go into photo shoot expenses as well as marketing, packaging, and website costs etc.
