Help Toby and Ryder become the first delegates from NZ to attend the Montessori Model United Nations in New York next year!
Auckland
Why Us?
Kia Ora, we are Ryder and Toby – two 10 year old tamariki from Meraki Montessori School in Silverdale Auckland. We are hoping to go to the Montessori Model United Nations in New York next year to speak for children that cannot speak for themselves and work with other schools from around the world to solve issues related to World Peace. We would be the first tamariki from New Zealand to ever attend. Maria Montessori who developed the educational philosophy our school is founded on was a huge advocator for peace education and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Price three times.
We are passionate about creating a world where children in every country have all their needs met and where woman are able to have access to all the rights that men have such as voting and going to school.
We are working hard to learn as much as we can about the United Nations – what they do and in particular the rights of children and women throughout the world. We have chosen to represent the Democratic Republic of Togo and will be learning about how complex these problems have become for their country by researching into their history, actions that have been taken to improve the rights of women and children and what the effects of these actions have been. We hope to come together with other schools from around the world to participate in a Montessori Model United Nations summit and work together with other countries to find a resolution that will improve these rights for all nations.
Before we arrive in New York we have a lot of work to do to be prepared to participate! We have to research and write position papers about what we believe the Democratic Republic of Togo would feel would be the best way to improve the rights of women and children, write an opening speech to present to our committee, create a cultural board about the Democratic Republic of Togo that displays how their fundamental human needs are met and learn LOTS of new terminology and language to help us successfully participate in a Montessori United Nations summit. We are lucky to have the support of two of our wonderful friends Blaise and Bella to help us with research and our teacher Rebecca who will be travelling with us to New York along with our chaperones (Ryder’s sister Letitia and Toby’s mum Lana) .
Why New York?
This is where the Montessori Model United Nations conference is held. On the last day we get to present our resolutions at the Headquarters of the actual United Nations in New York. We think to be able to sit where the actual representative countries sit and share their voice would be a very exciting experience. New York also allows us to be in a central place and meet with other tamariki from all around the world. To get the opportunity to hear the voices of tamariki from all around the world would be an amazing and memorable experience. To be the first tamariki from New Zealand to participate and represent our country would also be a very special honor.
Why Now?
In our research so far we have found out the following facts.
• Did you know that 700 million women from around the world are forced to be married as children?
• Did you know that Women live 18 years longer in developed states than they do in developing states?
• Did you know that the Syrian War is the cause of two million children not attending school?
• Did you know that 168 million children are forced into child labour?
We want to learn how to help change these facts now. By attending this conference we hope to develop skills and learn how to use our voice to change the world. We are so lucky to live the lives we do and want to use this to help children who are not as lucky as we are. By attending this conference we will get to speak with many other children who also want to achieve the same goal as us and hope that our voices together can be loud! When we come back we want to share our experience with others to help them feel brave enough to share their voice too and find ways to achieve peaceful resolutions and help children and women from around the world get access to equal rights.
