We're launching a programme to help Papakura young adults to discover their inner creativity using needle and thread!
Auckland
We're Janet and Darren the founders of Te Horoi Tereti. We want to give youth basic sewing skills, either done by hand or machine. There will be no monetary cost to students.
CLASSES:
Classes are limited to 6 students to allow quality time with each student.
Students will make everything from objects to clothing. Also the art of handmade needlework to embellish clothing or make artwork etc.
WHEN AND WHERE:
Classes are held in a sewing room environment at Fabricland in Papakura. Classes are one afternoon a week for 10 weeks. We start on the 6th October 2014.
STUDENT CRITERIA:
Any ethnicity or genders welcome from 16 to 30 years old, with a passion for fashion. Papakura residents get chosen first. Then students from other suburbs can apply.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM:
We aim to give youth stitching confidence which could lead onto:
- Further education in the clothing industry.
- Fabric/thread arts and crafts that can be sold at markets and to retailers.
- Building self esteem from participating in an area they enjoy.
WHY WE NEED HELP:
We have been donated HUGE amounts of fabrics. It’s enough for 2 years worth of classes. We have also had some old sewing machines donated, but unfortunately have found the sewing machines too unreliable.
We are seeking funds to buy sewing machines for students to use in class.
We want to take you on our journey with our students and ourselves. Each week we will have classroom video updates for you.
To those that make a pledge, we will be having open class days twice a term for you to come and follow our student’s progress.
When you pledge $30 or more, you will receive free 4 of Janet’s Needlework or Quilting designs with step by step instructions emailed to you anywhere in the world in PDF format.

On our way.... 8 October 2014
Thank you so much everyone for your help with our crowd funding.
A big thank you to Spar and Spark My Potential for giving us this chance to fund raise with them.
Because of your generous donations we have been able to purchase 6 sewing machines ( Brother NS30). So each student has a machine to use in class. Thank you to Brother and Fabricland for their help.
Our first class was the 6th October and it was great. The students loved it and so did we. Those that have donated have made a BIG difference to our young adults lives.
From now on your are invited to view out blog
