Stephanie urgently needs a hip operation.

  • Final Update dear friends and whanau

This is just to let you know that everything has gone very well since my hip operation four months ago. The physical healing has been accompanied by new energy and 'joie de vivre' - as everything is interconnected. I will always be deeply grateful for your kind support. Kindness is what helps us all get through the ups and downs of life. I call my left hip a "community hip". My right hip however has been 'playing up' and will, down the track, become a "public hip" as I am now on the "semi-urgent" waiting list to see a specialist pre-op.

The staff at Mercy Hospital were all fantastic and to keep my mind off things, I wrote a booklet of 20 limericks, one for every staff member. This was well received and the Hospital Manager wrote me a limerick in reply! He wrote

"Thank you for the effort you have put into this and the thoughtfulness behind it. We have shared it with all of our staff and Mr Munro, I’m sure those you have mentioned will be delighted. It is wonderful to know they are appreciated and you took the effort to learn about them all.

...Thank you for the creative way you have thanked us!

I should probably end with a Limerick about you as a patient…

    To Mercy Stephanie came,

Her leg was making her lame

    We gave her some care

    With our usual flair

And now she’s back on her game.

On that note, dear family and friends, wishing you all many blessings and kindnesses in your lives, Steph x

  • Two months post-op : A new lease on life!

    Dear generous family and friends,

Well, two months on from the hip operation things continue to go very well. I am resuming life with renewed energy and joy.

Every day is a new "milestone" as I rediscover what I can do. It's a bit like a rebirth. I am realising the healing is more than physical, I seem to have a new energy, joie de vivre, the healing is emotional and mental and spiritual. I remain humbled and so grateful for your support. I want to give back and serve the community in the best way I can into the future. Oh yes, the 6 week xray showed that my other hip is buggered too, but I will get on the long waiting list for the public system for this one. BLESS YOU ALL XXXX

  • Steph's Update: One month on with a new "community hip"

    Dear friends and family,

I have passed a milestone of one month since the hip-op and the hip muscles are getting stronger by the day, with pain 95% gone. I realised today that this new hip actually belongs to you!! it's a community hip!

I produced a little book of 20 light-hearted limericks for the staff at Mercy Hospital who cared for me over the 3 days. I sent the booklet called " Limericks for Caring People" to the CEO and he replied, "In all my years as a hospital manager I have never received feedback like yours from a patient!...Thank you for the creative way you have thanked us!" Then he wrote me a limerick:

    "To Mercy Stephanie came,

Her leg was making her lame,

    We gave her some care

    With our usual flair,

And now she's back on her game."

Every day I wake with gratitude for all your support that has helped me "get back on my game."

    Arohanui

    Steph xx

Dear Family, Friends, Community and Colleagues,

Just a quick post hip-op update, the operation was a week ago and I am recovering well, day by day. I hadn't been in a hospital for 41 years so it was an intense experience. I was in Mercy Hospital, Epsom, and the surgeon and nursing staff, physios and admins were all wonderful. I have an exercise programme to strengthen the muscles and get walking again. I will be forever grateful for all your financial, practical and emotional support. With much love, Stephanie xx

  • New Hip Tomorrow!

      18 January 2024

The date for the operation was shifted at short notice to Friday 19th - tomorrow!

so that involved a rapid pack up and exit from home, filling out lots of admin forms, negotiating with Givealittle to urgently release the funds you have all so generously given to pay all the invoices: $12k for the Surgeon and hip equipment; $2800 for the anaesthetist, $14.5K for the hospital. I remain so grateful to you all kind and generous donors. Think of me at 12.30pm tomorrow when they start replacing my raggedy left hip with a shiny new titanium one! All the preparations have gone so well with much practical support from family and community. True whanaungatanga. Love from Steph xxx

  • I have a date for a hip-op!

Dear kind whanau and friends, Thanks to all your good hearts and generosity, I have now seen a specialist hip surgeon in Auckland and have a date for the hip-op , March 5th! It is such a huge relief and I'm dreaming of that dance party for next summer! When the surgeon saw my year-old xray and the angular shape of my left hip ball joint, we both said " Hexagonal" at the same time! Like the hexagonal window in my house! I feel so humbled by the last 6 weeks being on the receiving end of life, with your pledges and warm comments, I'm now looking forward to moving ahead to a new chapter and back into the community mahi. Wishing you all a fantastic New Year! Steph xx

  • A thousand ways to say thankyou!

I asked for you to help me out,

    to give a little, but you gave a lot;

How many different ways can I express my gratitude

to friends, family, even persons unknown?

Hope, trust and love grows in my attitude,

& receiving all your support, my mind is blown!

Soon I’ll join the hip-op crew,

And I will live my life anew.

Next spring when the blossoms are out,

Let’s have a party, to sing and shout!

We are all woven together in this journey of life,

to create joy, peace, kindness – and no more strife!

Dear friends and family, this has been an amazing humbling journey. Thank you for all your generosity and supportive messages. When I get my new hip and I'm all healed up, later next year I'm gonna put on a dance party, to celebrate community, whanaungatanga, friendships and aroha!

  • Nearly Three Quarters there!

I am so grateful to friends, family and colleagues who have supported my Givealittle page so far. We have another quarter to go to reach the goal of $27k for a hip operation. If you can share the page with your friends, that would be awesome. I am hopeful we will make it, and am researching my options. In the meantime, here's a sneak preview of my new poetry book, currently being printed. One of the themes is about staying relentlessly positive whatever life chucks at you.
