Our youth suicide rate is too high in NZ and some of the identified risk factors include loneliness, a lack of connection and belonging and a lack of hope.

The Covert Theatre, a registered charity runs The Improv School, an organisation dedicated to enhance human connection through play. They run after school and school holiday programs for kids between 8 - 17 years of age. Their programs enhances kids’ emotional intelligence (EQ), builds resilience and confidence so that they are equipped to handle adversity and the challenges life throws at them. They have a real impact on children’s and young adults lives. Kids say the Covert helps them feel confident, build connections and learn how to collaborate with others, express their creativity. The programs give them a sense of community in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Improv is known to be an art form that enhances self-creation, self-discovery and self-expression. It’s used in many different places outside of theatre, from Silicon Valley to training doctors to be more empathic. The Covert helps kids feel comfortable in their own skin and give them the courage to be themselves. With more of this in our community, we’ll build more mentally strong young people who will thrive.
