The Yes And Trust

The Yes And Trust

The Covert is the home of improv comedy. We run workshops and shows bringing more fun, laughter and vibrancy to the community.

Auckland

The Covert Theatre is NZ's home of improv comedy at 51 Mackelvie St in Ponsonby, Auckland. We opened in June 2020 during a global pandemic and have survived!

We're an 86-seat theatre that runs improvised comedy shows from Thursday to Sunday and from Monday to Wednesday we run the Improv School - where we teach the life skills that improvisation imparts through play such as confidence, collaboration, creativity, resilience, being present to our city's youth and community. Connection is so important for children and adults as it is a major contributor to our well-being. In play there is no "other" and the Covert is a safe, non-judgmental place where you can connect with others and it gives you the courage to be yourself.

The Covert has been producing shows and community workshops since 2001 and now has its own home. We run after school programs and school holidays for kids from 8 - 17 years and community workshops for people 18 years +.

We have a community-centric philosophy, 'from grass roots to tall shoots' and welcome everyone. Improvisation is considered one of the most accessible art forms in the world and it is a wonderful vehicle for people of all ages to facilitate self-creation, self-discovery and self-expression - plus it is massive FUN!

We are dedicated to enhancing human connection through play and bringing more laughter and play into the world. We are greatly appreciative of your support!

More about us

The Covert Theatre's purpose is to enhance human connection through play. We do this by running NZ's only improvised comedy theatre in Ponsonby, Auckland. We're an 86-seat theatre with an Improv School using play to teach vital life skills to people from ages 8 to 88.

We have workshops Monday to Wednesday and shows Thursday to Sunday. We run after school programs, school holiday programs, improv for autism workshops and create a safe place for our tamariki to self-create, self-discover and self-express. Improv imparts crucial life skills such as creative thinking, connection, collaboration and builds confidence and resilience all through play. We are community in spirit and professional in standards. We are home to the world champions of improv The Improv Bandits and produce high quality shows on a weekly basis. We bring more fun, laughter and vibrancy to our community.

We have over 100 members and are a breeding ground for Kiwi creative talent and look to inspire the current and future generations of NZ actors, comedians, writers, directors and producers.

We create our own income to survive and rely on the generosity of the community to thrive.

Thank you!
