Heart Kids Southland

Milford to Invercargill by Bike

$0 raised

Cyclists ride 300 kms to raise funds for Heart Kids Southland to support the families of children who are diagnosed with heart defects.

Southland

This will be our 5th Milford Sound to Invercargill Charity ride for the Southland Heart Kids (previously known as “Southland@Heart”) and this year looks to be bigger than ever.

Tania McKenzie (one of Jason Gerken's good clients), was speaking of her 10 year old son Flynn, who was born with half a heart, and his time spent in Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland. It was a no-brainer for Jason. He had found a worthy local charity and the ride was born.

The ride was created by Steven Rhodes (a local car dealer), and Jason Gerken (a local hair stylist), who shared an interest in road cycling and decided to put their love for the sport to support a great cause.

Between 30 and 40 riders will start in Milford Sound at 6am on Saturday 14th November. The route will take them via Te Anau, Blackmount and Otautau to finish in Invercargill early in the evening, after completing some 300Kms of challenging road and weather conditions. The cyclists will be riding as a group, raising funds for, and awareness of, this fantastic charity.

When you make a donation to this fundraising page, your donation will be used to support Heart Kids and their families within the Southland region.

Your donation will be accepted as recognition of the effort made by the riders in completing this 12 to 13 hour journey. The money will be used by Heart Kids Southland to assist heart kids and their families throughout their lifetime of treatments.

Heart Kids Southland's involvement (page creator)

I am the mother of a Heart Kid. We found out our baby had a heart condition at our 24 week scan. Our baby would have to be born in Auckland and would need heart surgery. He had heart surgery at 7 days old. He is now 6 years old and loves life. He will require further heart surgeries but for the moment he is a normal, healthy boy. The support we received from the Southland branch of Heart Kids was beyond anything we could have researched or expected. It was personal and specific to what we were going through and has never stopped. We have a get together with other heart families throughout Southland about 4 times a year. No-one understands what you are going through like someone who had been there! This support is such an essential part of the journey for families like ours. We have met so many amazing people because of something so unfortunate. Please donate so this fantastic service can continue.
