ReBicycle Bike Rodeo

This project has reached its target. You may still donate to this project if you wish.

The ReBicycle team want to take our bike library and skills course on the road! To do that we need a trailer. Help us hit the streets.

Wellington

ReBicycle has built up a library of kids bikes and has funding from WCC for a skills/obstacle course. We have grand plans for these resources - the 'Bike Rodeo' - but we need your help!

We want to take them to community events, fairs and festivals, schools and parks. We want to give every kid in Wellington a chance to learn to ride a bike, or have fun on one, building their skills, fitness, confidence and sense of adventure.

To do this, we need a bike trailer. We have a unique opportunity (through a combination of generous supporters) to purchase a trailer and get it kitted out for the 'Bike Rodeo' - but we have to raise $2750 by Christmas.

We've got an amazing team of volunteers helping us along the way, and know that lots of you would love to help if you had the time or mechanical skills, so we've got a unique ask of you:

Can you give us an hour of your time?

Not an actual hour, but what you'd earn in an hour.

We know December is a busy time, so we don't want to commit you to a movie fundraiser or a quiz night, or ask you to sell sausages or raffle tickets on our behalf. Instead, we're asking for an $hour$. What do you think?

We hope that you can spare an hour of your time to help us make our goal of giving every kid in Wellington a chance to ride a bike a reality!

ReBicycle Charitable Trust's involvement (page creator)

ReBicycle is a new community organisation which ‘upcycles’ donated second-hand bikes into safe, practical commuter bikes to gift or loan to people who need them, starting with newly settled refugees in the Wellington region and low income families.

It's a community-led initiative preventing useful resources ending up in the landfill, reducing carbon emissions and enabling free healthy transport options. All bikes are donated or cheaply sourced, parts are donated or bought, and mechanics volunteer their time where possible.

Our bike library is currently available to schools and organisations doing cycle skills through Pedal Ready, but we'd like to make it more widely accessible with a bike trailer for transport.

About us

EkeRua ReBicycle is a charitable community organisation that is all about getting more people on bikes.

Every month, we receive dozens of bikes donated by generous Wellingtonians. Our volunteer mechanics fix them up and we carefully match them to people who need a bike.

So far we have repaired and re-homed over 2500 donated bikes in the Wellington region...and that number is continuing to grow!

We also create opportunities for tamariki from all backgrounds to learn and challenge themselves on bikes.

Bike month!  19 January 2017

Kia ora koutou katoa,

Around these parts February is known as Bike Month! And we're hoping to take that to the next level.

We've got the funds for our bike trailer/float thanks to all of you lovely people. Now it's time to put it all together. Once again, we need your help!

ReBicycle Trust is pretty much run by me with a huge amount of support from my partner Mike. He works all day to pay the bills then helps out in the weekend to fix up bikes. We also have two small assistants, ages 3 and 1, who are yet to master the art of truing a wheel but are pretty happy to help pump up tyres and get into the box of spare parts. My family has given up most of our garage, half our dining and a whole lot of my time to make ReBicycle work. Now it's time to do something for them.

Mike and I need a bunch of time to bring the 50-odd bikes stacked in our garage back to life. We also need time to fix up the trailer for the bike rodeo. We need time to design, build, and paint the obstacles for the skills course. We need time to organise events. We need lots of time!

Since ReBicycle's inception I've spent about 10-20 hours a week, in between nappy changes, daycare pick ups, mealtimes and 'real' work. So far we've made it work. But things are getting a bit tight. Both the bank account and the garage have no more wiggle room left.

So here's my brilliant plan:

Mike has a few weeks off in February which he can put to good use, to help fix bikes, juggle kids while I plan events and we build obstacles...but as he's a contractor this will be unpaid. If we could raise enough money to cover our bills and the kids daycare, we could make this work. That's about $1500 a week for the 4 weeks of February.

ReBicycle is (soon to be) a charitable trust and so far has no employees. I'm not paid for any of my time. But for the month of February, I'm asking our awesome supporters if you could help us cover our bills so we can dedicate our time to take ReBicycle to the next level?!?

Thanks,

Hilleke
