Lets help NiVanuatu rebuild their livelihoods

  • WOW! So, so grateful for your support.

This last post has been a little late in coming as we have been busy working with one of the school to create a school class lesson on how seeds grow, followed with a mass planting of vegetables in their school garden. Each student also received a sticker for their enthusiasm.

When we started this idea of fundraising we were not sure how it would all go, and if people were that interested in giving to a country that many don't know about. But seeing the destruction that TC Pam caused was a strong reason for us to continue with the idea. We have been so very humbled by your generosity to the project, and some still continue to do so through other means.

The work being undertaken in schools has been really well received and we are slowly expanding the number of schools that we are working with. To date we have actively worked with 3 schools with more than 3000 students in total. We will be expanding that number very shortly. Recently the Minister of Lands announced that state owned land can be made available to schools on application for extensions of their gardens. So that is a positive move.

Due to the nature of this project we have a local corporate sponsor wanting to contribute to the project which is another exciting development and reassurance that we are doing a good, worthwhile job.

Finally, we'd like to again express our gratitude for your generosity and your support for the idea. The recipients of that generosity are so grateful and will continue in the long term to do a better job of supporting students and parents through their vegetable gardens feeding the students.

We have been very busy assisting in the Government of Vanuatu's national seed distribution programme and through this work we have come to realise that there is a substantial volume of seeds being distributed to the most vulnerable islands across Tanna, Shefa and Penama provinces.

It has also become apparent that there could be food issues in the urban areas, and in particular Port Vila, consequently we have scoped out where we could be most useful in distributing seeds/seedlings. We have trialed a vegetable garden with a neighbouring school in an effort to assist them provide food for their school canteen, and consequently support the students and their parents.

We are absolutely thrilled with the first school garden completed, and are in the process of developing other school gardens.

Read about the story here in the local media:

We realise that there are different ways to grow livelihoods, so we are trialing a couple of methods to see what works best. So far we have sent a pack of seeds out to a family to grow their veges in their own time using their own methods. We are also working with a local school to build a vege garden, sow some seeds, add to the school's learning resources and provide much needed food for the school canteen.

To date we are growing tomatoes, dwarf beans, Chinese cabbage and cucumber from seeds and will be using these in the school garden.

We are thrilled with the support from all over the world to grow this project. We are on a mission to plant the first seeds by this time next week when we will be back in Port Vila.

We have been in contact with appropriate experts in this field and the advice has been to buy seeds and tools in Vanuatu, a local company is selling appropriate seeds at very little mark-up and so we have decided to support them to in turn support their employment of local staff. They also have the right seeds and equipment suitable for Vanuatu conditions and they are easy to work with. The company is a long established company and will continue to support locals over the long term.
