A page to help Hamish and his family when he heads to Singapore for 12 weeks to undergo a Stem Cell transplant in the hope of halting his MS
Wellington
Hamish was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2001 at just 27 years of age. Over the past 13 years Hamish's symptoms have progressively become worse, with relapses occurring regularly affecting his left hand, legs and vision, and he now lives with chronic fatigue and pain.
Hamish has tried the only disease modifying drugs available in New Zealand, unfortunately these have not provided any benefit.
Last year Hamish watched a 60 minutes documentary about an Australian woman with MS who went to Russia for life changing treatment to halt her MS. Since watching this programme
Hamish and his wife Kirsten have been researching options for Hamish to receive this HSCT (hematopoiectic stem cell transplantation, not available in NZ) treatment in the hope of stopping his MS in its tracks.
After initial testing recently in Singapore, Hamish has been accepted for Stem Cell treatment through a Singapore hospital, starting May or June 2015.
The treatment will mean Hamish will be in Singapore for approximately 12 weeks, with recovery taking approximately 12 months after treatment. The cost of the treatment, flights, accommodation, drugs and follow up appointments will be approximately $200,000 NZD.
This treatment is life changing for Hamish and his family. He is a proud Dad to 2 young kids. We have set up this site in the hope of raising money to help support Kirsten, Hamish and their kids over what will be a challenging 12 months. We would love it if you could make a contribution, if you can. Thank you.
Hamish is writing a blog about his jouney which you can follow here: http://hamishhaltsms.com/
And also please read the article that the NZ Herald have done on Hamish and his treatment - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11434508
Good luck Hamish, we will be thinking of you every step of the way.
Nadine, Laurie and I are great friends with Hamish, Kirsten and the kids and have watched them manage with Hamish's MS with such admiration - this is a life changing treatment for them, and I couldn't think of a more deserving family to help out
