Help me help my sister, a single mother of 4, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer get chemotherapy treatment not available in Fiji.

Wellington

My name is Asena Nakarawa and I migrated to New Zealand with my family in 2001. I live in Hamilton with my husband and six children.

Savaira Ratawa is my younger sister who is living in Fiji. She is a mother of four, separated from her husband for the last four years.

She went through a torrid dysfunctional marriage with an alcoholic and violent husband for more than ten years. The husband drinks away his whole pay package than comes home demanding food from the hapless mother.

Being the elder sister I tried all I can to assist them while I was still in Fiji but to no avail. In spite of my advise, my sister decided to remain with her husband for the sake of her children. To say that it was a miserable existence would be an understatement.

About three years ago my sister finally had enough and left the relationship taking her youngest daughter (who is now 3) with her.

Unfortunately, all the years of physical and psychological abuse have taken their toll. She became sickly, depressed; mentally traumatised and difficult to live with.

Her relationship with my other siblings became problematic because of her mental state. As a result I have had to take a couple trips to sort things out and settle their differences. It has been a painfully journey but one worthwhile when she finally improved and was able to live cordially with my other siblings in our village.

The euphoria however was short lived when my sister was admitted to hospital last year. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer but unfortunately chemotherapy treatment is not available in Fiji. Since then she has been in and out of the hospital.

Her life continues to deteriorate and without treatment the end is certainly near.

I have made arrangements for my sister to undergo treatment in Auckland and the total cost quoted is about $25000.

My family will meet her travel cost, accommodation, and treatment cost as no help is available from the Fiji government.

The total cost of the trip (including treatment) would well over $30000.

Any assistance therefore would be highly apprceiated.
