Please help my dad Russ get home. He has had a debilitating stroke. Only 52 years old and all we want is to have him home.

Canterbury

Please help my dad come home. Russ had a very big stroke in August this year. He is only 52 years old and was and still is the best dad anyone could ask for. We were transferred to Burwood hospital for Rehabilitation hoping to get dad walking and talking again like he used to.Due to the stroke he has suffered on the whole right side of his body being paralyzed with small movement returning in the leg and also has Aphaysia which means he can't speak and he doesn't comprehend what we are saying to him all the time. He was the life of every party. After 4 weeks post stroke Dad was doing so well moving his paralyzed leg and starting to speak again. However 4 weeks into the recovery he had a bleed in the brain which caused a seizure and set him back further after working so hard. Everyone thought he was going to be a miracle patient. We are back at Burwood hospital currently and Russ needs full time care. Our options are very limited because he can't stay at Burwood for much longer and to get a full time nurse at home it would cost more than we can afford and unfortunately we aren't fully funded. Our other options are to have him in a care facility which isn't what he would want and considering his age doesn't seem fair. Russ is still making great progress and needs to continue therapy's. Deep down I know he will pull through this and I believe he will walk again if we can continue to get as much therapy and support as we can. He has kept such a positive attitude towards everything even though he is basically trapped in his own body. Any funding we receive would go towards having a nurse at home and any extra therapy's that we can get to help benefit him.We are also looking at getting him a disability dog however we aren't funded for one either and it would more than defiantly benefit him as he needs a companion which helps with the recovery and would give him some independence. In time we would also like to be able to raise enough money to take dad overseas to get treatment that New Zealand doesn't offer. I am so proud to call him my dad and will do anything for him I just want my dad home!

I am Russ' daughter. He was my bestfriend as well as my dad and I want to do everything I can to help him get home and for him to lead a happier life because he doesn't deserve what's happened.

Russ' Progress  13 April 2015

Since January this year dad moved from Burwood to St John of God. This was a horrible decision that we had to make for dad. He isn't fond of the place at all. It is really hard for him and us to accept he isn't quite what he used to be. He is only there for rehab and once he has got to the stage where he is capable to look after himself he will be coming back home. House renovations also have to be made before he can come home. He does physio 4 times a week, this includes swimming as well. Currently we are working on his walking. He has made some great gains, it has been very slow and hard on him as well as us. He is now standing on his own and walking with some assistance. When he starts to get a bit stronger we hope he will be able to walk with a stick. They push him very hard and he never gives up. He also recieves speech and occupational therapy a few times a week. We would like to see more thearpys happening and plan to use the money raised on getting people into provide some more intense therapys. We have used some of the money for a drug called Neuro AID. This costs $1000 per month so its not cheap but we will do anything to help him. NeuroAiD™ is a natural oral treatment dedicated to stroke recovery and stroke rehabilitation.

NeuroAiD™ stroke treatment has been shown to increase the production of new neurons in the brain and supports the formation of new connections. We believe this has started to work. We can't thank everyone enough for the support and kindness. We are so proud and can't wait to see how much more he can achieve.

Hi Catherine...you won't know me but I worked at Singapore Airlines cargo in Chc with Rocky and Kempy back in the 90's and was good friends with Russ. I only just saw your post to Rochelle today and had no idea if his situation. Please accept my humble donation and please pass on to Russell my best wishes . He was an awesome guy and always spoke so highly of his family. I wish him and you all the best and would one-day hike to catch up again. I'm living in townsville QLD Australia with my family now . All the best
