Is housing a human right? How should our communities be organised? What place should state housing have in society?
Nationwide
The housing crisis has many worried and questioning the role of public housing in NZ. Recent changes to state housing in legislation have shifted the Homes for Life policy to the Reviewable Tenancies process placing hundreds of families in precarity. Over the last four years we have seen the state housing community of Pomare get decimated and the Maraenui and Glen Innes communities attacked, evicting hundreds with the aim to profit and privatise public housing and land. That's not to mention the travesty of government impotency in helping Christchurch's people get into livable and secure homes.
We are a research and praxis collective based in Auckland Tamaki Makaurau made up of students, artists and workers. We are researching the changes in state housing policy and the impact of these changes on communities around Aotearoa. We are involved in information gathering and the dissemination of this through various mediums both to the public and to affected tenants. We believe that housing is a human right that should be accessible to all.
