Shaun has short gut syndrome (which the doctors do not know much about) and he is on TPN and Lipids and NG feeding.
Hawke's Bay
He has been in hospital pretty much all his life, back and forth from Hastings to Wellington and Starship hospital in Auckland. Shaun has had 4 bowel operations, one called STEP (Which was the first of its kind to be done in NZ). He has had 7 Hickman lines inserted. They have had to have repairs or gotten infections or just had to be replaced. Donations proceed to fuel costs $10 every visits to and from the hospital, his medication fees, seleium drops 22$ a little bottle, $3 fees for just scripts to pharmacey to order his special formula.
Through all of this Shaun has been a loving, charming & beautiful son. He has a brother, sister and 2 step sisters and 1 step brother. He is loved by all the family, friends and medical staff he comes in contact with. I am amazed at his resilience, and his wonderful cheerful, easy going character. How we could possibly have come this far without that...I do not know.
One of the major problems I have faced is that all of the costs associated with Shaun’s condition fall on my shoulders. All of the travel, accommodation, fuel and everything else, comes out of our family budget. The only help I can get financially is for Shauns medical needs (for his medication & half the cost of his nappies as he goes through about 12 a day on a good day) & sometime, help with accommodation. I cannot work, as I don’t know from one day to the next, how Shaun will be, or where he will be. We could end up back in Auckland next week....I just don’t know.
Still in Auckland Starship 19 August 2015
Well... theres nothing to say at this point about what is happening with shaun. he didn't like going up a ML in his feeds so started the vomiting, his phostphate levels are too high now so taken that out of his TPN, his TPN and LIPIDS will be on 7 night a week, they won't send him back home until hes on 5 night a week, Shaun won't be going to school until he is 6 due to us not having a clearer picture on what is happening. the diabetes team are on the case at the moment due to this all might be a cause of his hormones. Noone knows what is happening with this boy but he will not be sent back home until he is well and the known cause has been revealed. we are back to the basics and going to be another big haul up the mountain again. the biggest worrie is that with all that is going on they don't want him to have another tenotamy, when his muscles all seize up again.
