This campaign buys clean underwear for prisoners at Arohata Women's Prison and supports trans prisoner advocate group No Pride in Prisons.
Wellington
We were outraged to hear that women's prisons in Aotearoa rely on charitable donations of underwear. We believe that a State incurs obligations when they imprison people to treat prisoners fairly. This includes an obligation to clothe them, and the fact the need for bras is ignored in this shows a sexist 'one size fits all' policy. Those of us with larger breasts know that having no bra or a badly fitting bra can be seriously painful, and we don't believe that someone in prison and without financial means should have to go without adequate underwear.
We also stand in support of the rights of trans prisoners. We will be hosting a free community forum next month to help with understanding around corrections policy and how we can try work against it. Half the money raised will go directly to No Pride in Prisons, to tautoko the amazing work they do advocating for the rights of trans prisoners.
The Wellington Young Feminists believe that sexism is linked with other forms of oppression. We believe that the justice system in our country operates in oppressive ways, and that prisoners are deserving of dignity.
