Super Sophie

  • Sophie is on the Plane

Sophie and Catherine flew off for St Louis, Missouri in the USA four hours ago; Sophie's brothers are missing their Mum terribly already and her Dad is pretending to be staunch. They will stop in at San Francisco for a few hours before heading onward. Packing for 5 weeks away in the cold was surprisingly challenging. One of the checked bags was over weight so we had to do a last minute redistribute at the bag check counter.

Sophie had a very special visitor at Kindy to wish her well this morning.

Thanks again to everyone for your generous support.

It's 19 days until Sophie flies out to the USA. There is still so much to do and the time is fast disappearing. We've added some recent pictures of Sophie.

  • Surgery Date Set

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated towards Sophie's surgery. We are overwhelmed by the generosity shown. We really appreciate all the help we are being given.

The date for Sophie's surgery has been set for Feb 26, 2015. Catherine and Sophie need to to be in St Louis, USA on Feb 23 for the first pre-op appointment, so will leave New Zealand on Feb 20. They will be away for 5 weeks in total and Catherine's aunt will accompany them for the duration to lend an extra pair of adult hands. Geoff will stay at home looking after the two boys.

Sophie is doing really well. She loved Christmas and has really enjoyed trying to keep up with her brothers on her push tricycle. In the last few weeks she has even been making a real effort to try to walk on her own. The gradual realisation that all her friends get around by walking, while she most often crawls, seems to be spurring her on. Though she seems to be enjoying the progress she's making, she is very unstable because of the spasticity in her legs and she manages to make it slowly across the room only some of the time. One time, after repeatedly failing to walk to the end of the hall, starting over again each time she fell, we found her quietly sobbing "I just want to do it like you can".

Thank you so much once again for your very kind generosity.
