I'm boxing in the UCSA Charity Fight Night to raise fund to send my friend and NZ representative Scott Martlew to the World Championships
Canterbury
Im fighting in the UCSA Charity Fight Night to raise money for paralympian Scott Martlew for the chance that he may compete in the Rio paralympics.
He is currently ranked 7th in the world, therefore missing out on automatic qualification for the Rio Olympics by one position. He has previously ranked 5th, and is very close to reaching automatic qualifying.
Scott had his funding cut at the start of the year from Canoe Racing New Zealand because he isn't regarded a genuine medal prospect for the Rio Paralympic Games in September 2016.
Scott suffered a muscle tear whilst we were playing 1st XV for Shirley Boys High at Jade Stadium. The muscle tear became infected with a flesh eating bacteria, and as a result, he suffered a full leg amputation. We had played rugby together for a number of years, and he was easily one of the most talented sports people I knew, already competing at a national level in surf lifesaving, and an international level in dragon boating.
Since then Scott has become a Christchurch based para canoeist in the newly established KL3 category.
Scott has already raised his own money for towards my build up campaign in Europe for flights for himself, his coach and training partner from mid July to mid August.
However, funding is still required for gear and travel costs while in Europe.
So donating to me will not only give Scott a well deserved chance to pursue his sporting dream, but you will also know that your money is going towards me getting smashed by a fresher. So a win win situation really.
I have never done any boxing or any fighting before, so this is very far out of my comfort zone.

Im involved in this for a number of reasons.
Firstly, I played in the game where Scott suffered his injury. One minute we were celebrating a dream come true, not only playing at Jade Staduim, but winning convincingly. The next weekend the unthinkable had happened, and Scott had a full leg amputation.
Raising this money will give Scott the chance he deserves at another opportunity after already being knocked down once.
Secondly, an opportunity to make a positive difference in anyone's life is a blessing, and being able to do it for a personal friend who very much deserves it makes it mean that much more to me.
