Besides rescuing unclaimed pound dogs, Dog Rescue Dunedin assists owners who cannot afford to desex their dogs by subsidising the operation.

Otago

My name is Donnalouise and together, we can help decrease the unwanted pet population. In support of Dog Rescue Dunedin (DRD) Charitable Trust’s desexing programme, I am organising the “Clipping for a Snipping” fundraiser. I will have my hair shaved at this year’s Thieves’ Alley Market Day on Saturday, February 9th. I will be just as lovable with a shaved head as a pup is after being desexed. No amount is too little, every dollar counts! Thank you for your support and watch this space for more details regarding the actual hair shaving event.

DRD officially began on December, 9th 2011 when co-ordinator Dr. Jo Pollard signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding with Dunedin City Council`s Animal Control staff.

Dogs picked up by Animal Control only have seven days in which to be claimed. Unclaimed dogs are available for adoption to the public for $195.50 but only some dogs find homes this way.

DRD now rescues these dogs, provides veterinary care (including desexing), food, home-based foster care, training and advertises them until they find their “forever homes”. So far, they have saved 402 dogs (31/08/18). DRD also assists owners in need of financial support to desex their dogs by subsidising the overall cost of the operation. This programme is subject to an application process and is also supported by local vets. Every $1,000 donated to this fundraiser will cover the cost of desexing approximately 4 dogs (dependent on sex, size, etc...).

My husband Kelly and I have adopted two amazing dogs, both rescued by DRD - Odin and Thora. Check out Odin and Thora’s antics on their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/OdinToTheRescue/

My first public speaking award was for a talk on preventing cruelty to animals. Although I have moved on to feeding the world and sustainable life on planet earth, there is a place in my WATTS-heart for looking after dogs as a way of treating all-life in general, with respect. Thank you for your efforts - your Gramma Rene is also smiling.

We are all grateful that DRD gave us the snip - and we think Odin's Maw Maw is very brave!
