Ben Thorpe's dread shave 2023

Canterbury

Kia ora team!

After 8 years together, it's time to say goodbye to the 'locks. That's right, the dreads are on the chopping block, and, as I've done previously, I'm eager to say goodbye and raise some cash for a couple of good causes at the same time.

I Am Hope/Gumboot Friday is a charity that helps young people to get continued mental health support after their initial subsidised sessions run out. Started by prominent NZ comedian, Mike King, in response to Aotearoa's horrific youth suicide stats, I Am Hope/Gumboot Friday is helping young people get the care they need by helping pay for their ongoing counselling or other mental health support.

Aviva (formerly Christchurch Women's Refuge) is a victim support organisation set up to help all victims of violence, without discrimination. Family violence in particular is a terrible issue in NZ, and Aviva is there to help people find safety for them/their families.

The shave date I have in mind is the 27th of Dec, 2023. And yes, I'll be saying goodbye to 99% of the hair on my head - probs down to a number 0 cut.

Why now? A tonne of different reasons - mostly because it feels right, but also because I miss the feeling of hot shower water straight on my scalp, and scalp massages in general.

It was hair, now it's gone!  28 December 2023

Yesterday was the big day, and the dreads have been harvested - 106 of them to be exact!

Yep that means the hair has gone! A few friends and family gathered in our yard with a few snacks and drinks, and took turns removing a dread or two at a time before clippers tidied up the rest.

The new look feels really good and my daughter Lily has thankfully gotten used to it quickly too. Temperature control will need some work, and there's some weight and pressure adjustments required. But the feeling of hot water straight to the scalp in the shower was heavenly.

Thanks everyone so so much for your generosity and support! Donations are open for a couple more weeks.
