Over the next 12 months, I’ll be walking 2000 kilometres to raise awareness and funds for survivors of sexual abuse.
Nationwide
Kia ora whanau. Thank you for visiting my wee page. In September my wife kindly bought me a Wilderness magazine subscription, and the very first issue I received contained a challenge. To commemorate 30 years of publishing, the good folk set the challenge for readers to walk 1200 kilometres over the next 12 months. I readily accepted the challenge-it would be the perfect motivator to get out doors and enjoy more of our beautiful backyard. But in order to make it even more motivating and meaningful, I decided to use this as a fundraising opportunity. My goal is to raise as many dollars as kilometres I walk, and I’ve stretched that goal out to 2000km. If donations exceed that, I’ll do my absolute best to match it with steps!
I will be putting these funds toward supporting the work of SASH (Sexual Abuse Support and Healing). Sadly, sexual abuse and the all the mess that goes with it, is an issue that is close to my heart. I’m a survivor of abuse, and I know too many others who are as well. SASH seeks to help support all survivors of abuse, inclusive of all genders and from all backgrounds, from helping navigate the initial nightmare of prosecution proceedings, through to counselling for the long journey toward healing.
I would be extremely grateful for any support in this adventure. And if anyone reading this is also a survivor, please know that you are not alone, it was not your fault, and your worth has no limits.
Week 10 12 January 2022
Happy New Year! I’ve been a bit slack with updates lately, but I’ve still been getting out and clocking the km’s! We’ve been treated to some fab West Coast weather and I’ve been making the most of it! It’s nearly the end of week 10 and I’m up to 385km’s. Some highlights have been looping Lake Kaniere, exploring Rotorua while on a course for work, taking Gypsy to bag her first peak at Mt. George, and her second at Helicopter Hill, and having my first route finding experience up above the Criaigieburn ski fields, and getting my tallest peak yet-Hamilton Peak (1922m).
I was also privileged to be interviewed for the Wilderness mag as part of their Walk1200 series (January 22 issue, pg 18). It was great to share what I’m doing and why, but it’s even better reading about others stories and being inspired and motivated to keep getting out there!
To those who have donated, thank you so much, it means the world. And if you haven’t yet, I would really appreciate the support, and if it doesn’t come in $$, a share is also fantastic! I hope everyone reading this is having a fabulous start to 2022, and once again thank you for your support!
