Our charitable purpose is to relieve poverty and help those in need. We want to keep kids warm this Winter and make them feel valued!
Auckland
‘Give a Kid a Blanket’ began in 2015 as a community activated art action lead by artists Bernie Harfleet and Donna Turtle Sarten, and runs across the greater Auckland area.
Since it’s beginning the project has gone from strength to strength thanks to the ever increasing community of kindness that supports it. Give a Kid a Blanket is now a registered charity with donee status
Each Winter ’Give a Kid a Blanket’ gathers blankets and other items of warmth, which are given to children and families in need through social workers, public health nurses, the police, emergency housing, refuge, and other community workers.
For those who receive the donations, the idea is that they not only feel warmer but importantly, valued by the wider community.
While the projects results in growing numbers being helped to be warmer, it’s focus is on the simple act of kindness that so many can make and how collectively as a community we can make a difference.
Over the last five years we have given out over 60,000 blankets and over 40,000 other warm items. This year we are doing it again, but as the collection has grown each year so have the costs of running it. ‘Give a Little’ donations will help us to buy blankets and help cover costs. This year in order to ‘Give a Kid a Blanket’, we are hoping people will ‘Give a Little’ too.
