The Dunedin Opera Company Incorporated

Opera Otago has been bringing opera to the South of NZ for nearly 60 years. It relies on donations and grants from people like you.

Otago

Opera Otago is the branch of Dunedin Opera Company Inc. that produces operas to share with the Otago community. It was formed as part of the new direction the company decided to take in the early 2000s, with a move towards innovative, high quality productions. An important aspect of what Opera Otago does is providing a platform for young NZ performers to develop their skills. Opera Otago also particularly has an interest in staging new works by New Zealand composers, as they did with 'This Other Eden' in 2014, a production that won 'Scenographic Design of the Year', 'Technical Design of the Year' and 'Director of the Year' at the 2014 Dunedin Theatre Awards.

Opera Otago aims to present one major production per year, with workshops and tours of the region where time and resources permit. Its Executive Committee is entirely volunteer-based, and is currently made up of eleven enthusiastic and talented individuals with a broad range of experience and knowledge that they utilise in running the company.

Opera is an experience like no other - nowhere else will you find the combination of live singing, live orchestra, beautiful costumes, sets that capture the imagination, lights that bring to life all the extremes of emotion that you can imagine. Comedy, romance, and tragedy - love, jealousy, betrayal and madness: it's all there unfolding on the stage before you. If you love opera, if you know someone who loves opera, if you want to discover opera, or if you want to support the continuing existence of a strong presence of the arts in the Otago region, please donate and tell your friends!

More about us

The Dunedin Opera Company Inc. is New Zealand's longest-running opera company, soon to be celebrating its 60th anniversary. It is situated in Dunedin, and is committed to: producing quality opera; presenting new works that tell our NZ stories; offering innovative approaches to traditional works; and supporting young NZ performers.

For its first 45 years, under the name 'Dunedin Opera Company' presented productions with local amateur choruses, talented local soloists and a sprinkling of outside paid soloists when necessary. In the last 15 years, under a new name, 'Opera Otago' has taken a new direction with a move towards innovative, high quality productions, providing a platform for young NZ performers, while continuing to share the live experience of opera with audiences in the South of New Zealand. Opera Otago particularly has an interest in staging new works by New Zealand composers, and presenting old works in new and innovative ways.

As a not-for-profit volunteer organisation, Dunedin Opera Company Inc. relies on grants from local and national businesses and trusts to support it. We also rely on individual supporters who make up our audience, our membership base, and who can donate to help us to maintain a quality home of Opera in the South of New Zealand.
