We want to make a video about helping vulnerable children and young people involved with the law to communicate effectively.
Auckland
We are three speech-language therapists passionate about making a difference for vulnerable children and young people and those who support them. Our project concerns the language and communication skills of children and young people who are involved with the legal system in Aotearoa New Zealand. This is a new area of work for speech-language therapists in NZ.
Talking and understanding others' talk are skills that are central to all aspects of life. When these are difficult skills for children, it is vital that adults recognise this and know what to do. Language and communication are protective skills. Children need to grow these skills for success in education and social situations. These skills help build resilient mental health and it is very important that children involved with the law (whether care and protection or justice) can participate and understand what is happening.
We want to make a video that explores the facts about language and communication and vulnerable children and young people in New Zealand. We want to use interviews and practical examples to clearly explain what adults can do to help.
We are three speech-language therapists that run Talking Trouble Aotearoa NZ. We focus on the language needs of vulnerable children and young people involved with the law. We are involved in providing professional development for adults who work with children and young people, NZ research, advocacy and specialist clinical speech-language therapy services.
