A simple kiwi dream

  • HomeBound

      2 March 2017

We have made progress! Its great news to hear today that Basil has been released from Waikato hospital and is now homebound (in a sense) for Taupo.

His wounds are healing well and his skin grafts have taken 100 percent, which is the result we were after. Basils rehabilitation has gone well considering the seriousness of his accident and from here on in he should be able to self manage his cares with a few daily visits from the district nurse.

Where to from here, well I'm told that Phillip and some volunteers down in Foxton are in the planning stages of the campervan project. Basil has said there is no rush for completion as his focus will be looking after his health over the next few months. Thank you to everyone who has offered their services and materials. Every little bit is much appreciated. A special thank you to our new friend from Napier who has kindly offered her transporter to move Basils campervan from Taupo to Foxton. Its a big weight of Basils mind and a step closer to getting him into his new home.

For those of you waiting to hear back from Kaycee, she is currently out of the country but will be back next week. I will continue to update the progress as we go along. Hopefully we can get some pictures from everyone involved in the rebuild along the way and post them up on this page.

Keep checking in for updates guys. Thank you all for your wonderful support.

    Nga mihi nui

    Lyn

  • What a response!!!

Wow, where do we begin. The last few days have been pretty overwhelming for Basil due to the response to our call for help. Every dollar that has been donated, every word of encouragement that has been received and all the offers of help truly do reflect a real spirit of community and it cant be said enough, thank you for it all.

Time for an update, the question of insurance has been raised. It has been asked that we clarify Baz does NOT have insurance. His daughter Michelle would like to assure you that she will arrange this side of things for her dad from here forward.

At this point in time, our only focus is to ensure Baz has a place to call home after his recovery. We have had an offer of help to assess and perhaps restore the campervan. This would be the ideal outcome. However to have this happen we need funds to put towards this project (which is currently happening). We will also at some stage need donated materials and manpower. If anyone is interested in becoming involved with this project please contact Kaycee through email at kaycee_wall@windowslive.com or txt and messages can be left @ 027 764 3516.

As for Basil, he has been the perfect patient. Having never been one to accept others help, its nice to see him let go and allow the nurses to steer the reigns for a bit. At this stage his biggest concern is infection but so far, so good. He looks to undergo surgery for skin grafting this Wednesday. All in all, his recovery is progressing well and far better than we could have hoped. A large part of this is due to the support recieved from the Waikato Hospital staff, fellow NZMCA members, new friends and old, and of course you.

**The pic above was taken this afternoon as Baz was being set up for his interview**

Thank you all for the love and kindness.

    Nga mihi nui

Firstly, on behalf of the family, they would like to thank all those who have contributed so far, even if it was just to share this page. It really is appreciated and goes a long way to helping this man in his time of need. Baz is still in the burns and plastics unit at Waikato Hospital recieving treatment. He looks to be in the clear, however his road to recovery will take quite some time. Please continue to share. This page will be updated as Basils recovery progresses. Nga mihi nui, Lyn.
