50km for Veterinary Mental Health

This October, I’ll be running the Taupō 50km Ultramarathon to raise funds for Not One More Vet (NOMV) in memory of my very close friend Niki.

Niki was a veterinary nurse who dedicated her life to caring for animals and supporting others. She was compassionate, kind, and made a lasting difference in the lives of many. We lost Niki to suicide, and her loss has deeply impacted everyone who knew and loved her.

As a veterinary student, this cause is incredibly close to my heart. I see the passion and dedication people bring to this profession, but also the immense pressures they face. Vet professionals carry a significant emotional burden while supporting animals and families through some of their hardest moments. Long hours, compassion fatigue, financial pressures, and the stigma around asking for help can leave many struggling in silence.

Running has always supported my own mental wellbeing, so taking on this challenge felt like the right way to honour Niki while supporting a cause that means so much to me.

50km will be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it doesn’t compare to the challenges many veterinary professionals face every day. This run is my way of honouring Niki’s memory and reminding others they are not alone.

Every dollar raised will go directly to NOMV in memory of Niki, supporting mental health resources, peer support, education, and crisis assistance for veterinary professionals.
