Te Atarangi's first day in the ward was on the the 9th Feb around around 12pm she was very swollen in her face after surgery her lips eyes her whole face really but that was normal as she was face down for 10.5hrs, she was very thirsty she skulked back a couple of cups of water in about 3hrs and ate half an lemonade ice block and if anyone know's Te Atarangi drinking that amount and eating anything cold is out of the blue for her, we were so happy to see this we noticed the change in her straight away and filled our hearts so much below is a pic of her back on the ward.

Hi Family sorry for the late updates: we have had a fair bit going on this past week,

Te Atarangis Spine Fusion Surgery went well Te Atarangi went in at 08.26am on Wednesday the 8th Feb and surgery finished around 7pm that night so 10.5hrs long was very emotional long day for her mama and myself and everyone back home waiting to hear the news she was out, the Surgeon said that she did so well during surgery better than anyone one had expected she lost a very little amount of blood during the surgery, they were very happy everything went smooth,

After surgery Te Atarangi went into PICU ( ICU) for kids she is is a fighter my moko she was trying to move as soon as she woke up they had taken the breathing tube out and she was on normal Oxygen she did have a blood transfusion in PICU and she was a little pale and her cell count was a bit low but that was the only thing that was wrong (super grateful to everyone that donates Blood thank you xxox ) Te Atarangi was only in there till the next day she was strong enough to go to the Normal Post surgery ward to recover, below is a photo of her back straight after surgery.

  • Surgery Delayed till the 8th Feb

      13 January 2023
    Main image

Hi Whanau and Friends following Te Atarangi's Spine surgery journey,

Just letting you all know we traveled up to Auckland on the 8th January,

Te Atarangi was admitted to hospital on the 9th for a couple a days before surgery to have a CPAP machine to help her lungs for surgery,

Day of Surgery was the 11th we got Te Atarangi ready as they were coming to collect her at 0745 then we were told that we didn't have a PICU bed for after surgery as there was an emergency child with a heart condition that needed surgery, as disappointing as it was that Te Atarangi's surgery was not going ahead we totally understand why,

But we do have a new date so this will now be on the 8th Feb so just a little over 3 weeks the Surgeon said we wont be cancelled again next time so we have hope, Again we will travel up to Auckland a couple of days earlier to get ourselves settled and build ourselves up again for Surgery day its an emotional Ride many tear's have been shed this week, so thank you all for your kind and ongoing support during this time for us all, Stevie, Nannie and especially our beautiful Te Atarangi xxox Nga Mihi

She had a wonderful time she was throwing balls at a couple of the games they had for the beautiful children that all attend this it is very special i wish i could upload more pics to show you all, we were there for about 1.5hrs but toward the end Te Atarangi was getting pretty tired but a lovely day out for our Beautiful girl thank you so much Pip for the invite.

Also a Big shout to everyone that has approached us and have Donated to the Hospital Fund Account we have for Te Atarangi (we are in the process of changing accounts for the give a little funds get paid into this account also) we are truly thankful for all your help i wish we could thank you all in person it's very humbling to us all your beautiful Messages to us and for Te Atarangi they honestly help us get through this time so please take this as a personal thank you to you all we appreciate every single one of you xxox

Also an update for the day we leave Palmerston north will be on the 8th of January now flying out at 10.10am we are going up one day earlier to get ourselves settled with Te Atarangi before being admitted to hospital on the 9th Jan,

Since Te Atarangi has been on the tube feeding she has slowly started to put on some of the weigh she has lost so we take every gain as a step in the right direction being more healthy and fit for surgery and the long recovery afterwards so this is a big positive for Te Atarangi :-)

Hope you are all safe and well please take care and enjoy every moment you spend with your loved ones hug them a bit tighter and a bit longer for us thank you.

  • Second Hospital stay in 2 weeks

      5 November 2022

Hi Whanau Nannie here our Beautiful girl Te Atarangi was rush to our doctors after being Lethargic on Monday the 31st had a bit temp too,

Our Doctor said she needed to go to hospital as he heard a crackle in her chest and she needed antibiotics maybe via IV he thought would be better than oral antibiotics as we needed to get on top of this as it was her 4th chest infection in 3months,

So off to ED we went after spending a few hrs in ED (4hrs) Te Atarangi was admitted to PN hospital children's ward for overnight Observation as the doctor in ED never heard the crackle in her chest, we get to the ward and the nurse heard the crackle called the doctor back up from ED he checked her over again and then he heard the crackle,

Te Atarangi's chest infection got worse over night so she was put on very strong antibiotics the next morning by a new doctor and still in for another night to see how she goes also her heart rate was elevated to 161 BPM so we were going nowhere anytime soon,

Te Atarangi is still on the tube feeding 1000mls at 70mls over 14.5hrs but we had to reduce that to 50mls per hr as her tummy could not handle this with coughing up of the phlegm all the time was making her sick,

Te Atarangi is still not really eating food more picking at her food having a couple of mouthfuls if we are lucky then she tells us "full"

Te Atarangi has gone from roughly 4mths ago eating a solid normal plate of food every meal to one or two mouthfuls if we are lucky its heartbreaking seeing her like this daily to say the least all because of her spine,

TE Atarangi spent 3 night's in hospital this time she left on a gate pass so if she went down hill we bypassed ED and straight back to the ward super Grateful to all the Beautiful Nurses on the children ward at PN Hospital they are truly an amazing Team.
