The beneficiary is my Grandfather. He was scammed out of a very large sum of money. His case has been in the media since December.
Auckland
In December 2018 my Grandfather heard a knock at the door, A man who called himself "Tim" offered to clean the roof and outside of his house. My Poppa declined their offer and sent them on their way, they proceeded to come back a further 2 times that day offering him cheaper and cheaper quotes. My Poppa was stressed and upset as he was about to travel to Tauranga for a close friends funeral, To try and get them off his back he accepted the 3rd quote. He then proceeded to withdraw $1100 cash from a ATM.
The following day 2 men started water blasting the outside of the house whilst the 3rd began to inspect the roof and chimney. They told him it needed immediate repairing and for a further $2,500 they could get an "expert" to asses the damage. They began to demand further cash and the price of repairs climbed higher and higher in total $18,800 was handed it over, the 3 Irish men were never seen again.
The amount of money he has been scammed out of was most of his life savings. This was a huge blow for him as he lives alone and receives a small weekly pension. He does not want to be named as he feels embarrassed, deflated and foolish, that sparkle in my poppa eye is now gone. As his family it is heart breaking to see. There has been multiple reports to the police of the same men scamming other elderly people, these men are "wolf in sheep's clothing" preying on the elderly who are vulnerable. Any donation no matter how big or small is much appreciated!
