A Home for Johan

Johan is a 19-year-old young man who has made Wairarapa his home after moving from South Africa three years ago as a dependent on his mother’s visa to join his stepfather. A hardworking and eager young man, he completed NCEA Levels 1, 2, and 3 at Kuranui College in under two years, gained practical safety and trade certificates, and loves giving back by volunteering at the Carterton Food Bank.

Just before turning 18, tragedy struck when Johan's mother died suddenly, followed shortly after by his grandmother. Within months, he lost his primary caregivers and entire family safety net. Because he was already 18, formal adoption by his stepfather was legally impossible, leaving him facing deportation to South Africa with no home, relatives, or support.

Through local support, we are deeply grateful that the Minister of Immigration has granted Johan a work visa by Special Direction, giving him the chance to stay lawfully and build a sustainable future here. However, this approval comes with an important condition: Johan must pay the visa application fee, associated processing costs, and required medical expenses.

As a visitor, Johan is legally unable to work to earn these upfront fees. He is ready, highly employable, and dreams of becoming a Police Officer, but he needs our help clearing this final hurdle.
