Adaptive Kayak for Auckland waterfront

Fundraising for adaptive kayaking community initiative.

Auckland

We are a group of individuals with physical disabilities who share a love of outdoor activity and adventure. Finding opportunities for getting into the outdoors can be challenging and expensive for people living with disabilities. To this end we are looking to provide an adaptive kayak for use by disabled people living in and visiting Auckland. If the project is as successful as we anticipate, we will look to initiate and support similar ventures throughout New Zealand.

Initially we are hoping to fundraise for one, or two if fundraising efforts allow, adaptive kayaks that will be stored and available for use on the Auckland waterfront. These kayaks are unique in that they are propelled through the water by use of flippers situated under the boat. These flippers are propelled by pushing and pulling on crank arms in the kayak cockpit. While the kayaks we are looking to purchase are designed for use with the legs, they are easily adaptable for use with the arms (see YouTube link below to see how a kayak can be easily propelled with the arms without the need for a paddle). By eliminating the need for a paddle this will make kayaking an accessible recreational choice for people with limited upper body/limb function.

The kayaks will have outrigger stabilisers attached, making these craft all but impossible to capsise, and a purpose-built trailer to make launching into the water easy for those without the ability to stand.

Use of funds

The money will be spent on one (or two) Hobie kayaks with outrigger stabilizers, a dolly and costs to adapt the propulsion system.

If we are unable to raise the full amount needed, the total raised will be donated to the Halberg Foundation.
