Kauri Trees is creating a unique 20,000 tree Kauri forest - the largest in NZ (by tree count), and the most southern.
Taieri Beach, Otago
Kauri Trees Limited (www.kauritrees.nz) is creating New Zealand's largest contiguous Kauri forest (by tree count) in Taieri Beach, Otago. When complete in 2026, the forest will include more than 20,000 Kauri trees.
At 46 degrees south, the forest will also be NZ’s southern-most significant stand of Kauri trees.
The property is 28 ha. 20 ha of pasture will transformed into the Kauri forest. The remaining 8 ha is already virgin indigenous forest. The pasture has been segmented into three planting Areas to minimise any losses caused by extreme weather.
There are no plans to fell the trees (apart from necessary thinning). The trees will be grown for future generations as a permanent forest. Each Kauri tree will have an RFID tag so that individual tree growth performance data can be measured to advance the science and understanding of growing Kauri.
Stage 1
Indigenous nurse trees are being planted as Stage 1. They will protect the young Kauri. In August 2023, 7,325 nurse trees were planted in Area 1. Areas 2 & 3 will be planted in May and August 2024.
Stage 2
Kauri seedlings are currently being cultivated in the nursery. From May 2025, they will be planted amongst the nurse trees, which will protect them from wind and frost, and draw them skyward.
Eventually, the Kauri will crowd out the nurse trees. The nurse trees will have done their job, leaving the mighty Kauri to dominate the landscape.
Future
3.6 km of walking track has been marked out to meander through the forest.
Donations will be spent on propagating and planting the nurse trees and the Kauri trees. The major costs are the nursery (Ribbonwood Nursery, in Dunedin) and the planting company (Habitat Restorations Aotearoa).
Hi Tilly, Thanks for your generous donation. The total cost to get a tree in the ground (growing seedling, ground preparation, planting) is around $20, so your donation will cover 2 trees. Cheers, Peter
Thank you your donation. I hope you will follow our progress.
Thank you for being our first donor. I'm pleased you love the project and I trust you will follow our progress.
