Basic necessities for Afghan refugees arriving in Aotearoa NZ
Auckland
Many of us have watched the horrors unfold in Afghanistan over recent weeks as the Taliban have seized control over the entire country, leaving thousands of people displaced and fearing for their lives. A group of approximately 200 refugees from Afghanistan are set to arrive in Aotearoa NZ very shortly. These people would have been evacuated with very little beyond the clothes on their backs.
They will be needing clothing items, sanitary products, and other basic necessities upon their immediate arrival, as well as to help in the difficult process of rebuilding their lives in a new country.
I will be liaising with the organisations who are supporting the resettlement of these families to ensure the donated goods reach them and are appropriate to the needs of the individuals and their families.
While the situation in Afghanistan may seem too distant for us to change, by supporting those who have arrived we can make a meaningful difference in their lives and show them the manaakaitanga (hospitality/welcoming) that we pride ourselves on.
I belong to the Afghan community of Aotearoa NZ and will be assisting in the resettlement of these newly arrived Afghan families in a voluntary capacity.
I will use the money to buy clothing, sanitary products, household goods. I am working with the Red Cross to help distribute these items.
