Running Auckland for Andrea

  • Update for 04/11/2010

      4 November 2010

Hi Everyone, it's Andrea here. I would like to thank each and everyone of you so much for your support of Forrest and I over the last 5ish months. I guess if it wasn't for Nancy (the C in my lung) I wouldn't have had the privilege of being on this journey with him. Forrest only told me about his fundraising efforts a couple of months ago which nearly made me collapse at the knees. I think it was when we were running the waterfront one lazy Sunday. I have been very humbled this year by many?people and many occasions?but this sort of took the cake. I asked him if would have done it if Nancy wasn't around and he replied 'Shit no!' So that's just the quality of person i've been lucky enough to traiin with. We've had a lot of fun and now it's all OVER!!? We've completed our first Marathon, and still can't believe we've done it. You can do it too. We're starting up a M running clinic cos we know everything now. You will have drawn the conclusion that Forrest was very passionate about this hence the constant data stream that he can recall, you must have experienced a post run recall I'm sure. We must also thank our darling spouses, Russ and Jenny (aka Tania) for their support and patience with us. Despite the eye rolling and the odd snap we know they do love us and want us to continue running M's. I feel the M?training as forced Nancy to rethink her position and she has gone into hiding. here's hoping it's for a long time. Do I have to keep running?? I will if I have to!

  • Last long run done - Race Week is here!

      25 October 2010

Well here we are. We started our training in June and this Sunday we find out just how much it's paid off.? Are we ready, or aren't we? Mentally I guess everyone who does this has doubts, but we do know for sure that the kilometres have been clocked up About 850 by the time we finish). We have hardly missed a session. I would think somewhere betwen 5 and 10% missed and only 1 long run when we were all in Fiji in September. Other than that we have ticked all the boxes and will be as prepared as we can be. All we need now is a week of good rest, good food and lots of hydration and we should be feeling perfect for Sunday. Good weather and a bit of good luck wouldn't hurt either! This week we have a couple of 40-50 min runs and that's it. The 20+ weeks of training have been excellent. Last Thursday in terrible conditions while running we were talking about the bad runs, the times we hated it. I think we both agreed that the run from Dannemora to Ardmore Airport and back was incredibly ugly. It was our 1st 30K run, It was hilly and on an open road with nowhere to run so probably quite dangerous too. Being the step up it was, we also learnt from it as we have with almost every run done. There have been other ones where one of us has struggled a bit but the other one has always dragged us through. I think it's fair to say we are beginning to feel a little flat at the prospect of this being finished, it has been a great experience and I suggested to Andrea that about 30 minutes after we finish Auckland we need to start planning the next one. I am not sure whether it was a smile or a grimace that she served up but I hope we continue to train and compete in more events. Finally a big thank you again to you all for your generous support. It's so motivating to have you all behind us. At the time of writing this I have managed to raise $1700 with your help. I am not sure whether I will update this again before Sunday. If not, it would be great to see as many of you as possible there on Sunday. We are hoping to finish in around 4:30 which would get us into Victoria Park at 10:40. Cheers Delmar

  • 2 weeks to go

      17 October 2010

It's hard to believe we are almost there. After over 5 months of training there are just 2 weeks to go now and we have started to wind back our training so we will be feeling good on the 31st. Today was only a? 2hr run. Andrea and I had to train separately today as Russell has been away and flew home this morning. The excitement of completing our first marathon is building but as Andrea said the other day, the excitement is followed by waves of nausea!. We've done all the training we can and will be as ready as we can be. We've remained mostly injury free with the exception of some general aches and pains, blisters, and a painful thing called the IT Band We've learnt alot over the last few months about what works and what doesn't. Last week I ticked all the wrong boxes for preparation and long distance running and suffered for about 2 days afterwards. Runing on empty and expecting the body to handle it's 4th straight day of training with a long run didn't work. The positive has been that they have been learnt before the 31st and we (okay I ) won't make those mistakes then. Andrea continues to amaze me. I moan and complain at all my aches while Andrea just charges on regardless of how she is feeling and then ups the speed when she has her ipod playing. It reminds me to take a teaspoon of cement! This week we have two 50 minute sessions, 1 speed session and a 90 minute run next weekend.

  • 5 weeks to go

      27 September 2010

Hi all A big thankyou to everyone that has donated so far. We have 5 weeks to go and our training is going well. No major injuries other than the typical tiredness and aches that we expect from the distances we are covering. We have now completed two runs over 30kms and they were certainly a step up. We are aiming to do a couple more of similar distance over the next couple of weeks before we wind down. Each week now consists of at least 50kms made up of a long run Sunday, a mid distance Wednesday and two shorter runs focussing on either speed or hills. Our favourite training days are Monday and Friday which are our rest days :-) The hardest part is not knowing how it will all come together on the day. There are so many programmes out there with quite different training regimes. That's it for this week - more updates over the next few weeks as we get more excited and nervous!
