Help Bring My Symphonic Memoir to Life

Join me in recording a symphony that gives voice to young stroke survivors. This world-first project turns lived experience into awareness, advocacy, and hope for those forgotten. It will be used to help develop resources for survivors including Stroke Recovery and Community Hubs.

My Journey

In November 2021 I had two strokes, and I lost the ability to play my instruments, a devastating blow that took away my primary form of musical expression. Despite this heartbreaking challenge, I discovered a new path through composition, pouring my emotions into a six movement symphonic memoir that captures the raw, transformative journey of recovery.

Why Your Support Matters

Your contribution gives voice to stroke survivors. This music took two years to write while recovering from stroke. It now stands for stroke survivors, and those misdiagnosed, unsupported, and forgotten. Your support helps shine a light and drive real change.

How Funds Will Be Used

*Professional musicians and conductor fees

*Post production costs

*Educational and advocacy resources for stroke awareness and to develop a Stroke Recovery and Community Hub

Every dollar brings this symphony closer to reality. Your support not only funds a recording, it helps share the hidden story of stroke survivors. Be part of creating a lasting musical legacy that informs, inspires, and advocates for stroke survivors.

Thank you for joining this symphonic journey of awareness and hope!

Use of funds

Funds will cover professional musicians, conductor fees, and recording costs for my stroke recovery symphony. If we fall short of our goal, I'll produce a scaled-down version with fewer musicians or select movements, still creating meaningful music.

Update: Better Brains  16 August 2025

Since finishing my symphony, I have been developing Better Brains. This is a survivor-led organisation for younger stroke survivors in New Zealand. It will offer therapy grants, peer support and recovery programmes created by people who have experienced stroke themselves.

Recording the symphony will help raise awareness that strokes are affecting more people under 65. It is also a way to begin funding Better Brains and providing practical support for recovery.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. Your support is helping turn this project into reality. Please share the page with others so we can keep building momentum.

Andrew was my first alto sax teacher 30 years ago and is a remarkable and talented musician, composer and teacher. His brilliant teaching inspired me to continue playing these past years and at nearly 70, I still play in a Community concert band!
